UK Monthly Working Hours Calculator
Monthly-paid staff often need to know how many hours a month their contract really represents — for example when checking an hourly equivalent rate.
This calculator uses the standard payroll method of averaging 52 weeks across 12 months, and can also deduct paid holiday to show hours actually worked.

How to use this calculator
- Enter your contracted weekly hours.
- Optionally enter your paid holiday in weeks to see hours actually worked.
- Use the monthly average when converting a monthly salary to an hourly rate.
How the calculation works
- Monthly hours = weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12, because a calendar month is longer than four weeks.
- A four-week month figure is also shown for four-weekly payroll cycles.
- Holiday weeks are subtracted from 52 to give the hours you actually attend work.
Example calculation
Inputs
- 37.5 hours per week
- 5.6 weeks paid holiday
Result
- 162.50 hours per average month
- 1,950 paid hours a year
- 1,740 hours actually worked
Things to keep in mind
- Months differ in length, so any monthly figure is an average rather than an exact count.
- Bank holidays may be included within your 5.6 weeks — check your contract.

Frequently asked questions
How many working hours are in a month?
For a 37.5 hour week it is about 162.5 hours; for a 40 hour week it is about 173.33 hours. Both use the 52 ÷ 12 average.
Why not simply multiply by four?
