Notice normally starts the day after notice is given. Check your contract — this is guidance, not legal advice.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the first day of the contract.
  2. Enter the contract length and its unit.
  3. The final day shown is the last day covered by the contract.

How the calculation works

  • The length is added to the start date, then one day is subtracted so the final day is inclusive.
  • Month and year lengths keep the same day number where possible and shorten to the last day of a shorter month.

Example calculation

Inputs

  • Start 1 March
  • 6 months

Result

  • Final day 31 August
  • Contract length 184 calendar days

Things to keep in mind

  • Fixed-term employees generally have the same rights as permanent staff, including notice and redundancy rights after qualifying service.
  • Renewals and extensions should be confirmed in writing before the end date.

Frequently asked questions

When does a 12 month contract starting 1 April end?

The final day is 31 March the following year, with employment ending at the close of that day.

What if the contract length lands on a date that does not exist?

The calculator uses the last day of that month. Three months from 30 November becomes 28 or 29 February.

Do I still get notice on a fixed-term contract?

Usually yes if the contract is ended early, and statutory notice rules can also apply. Check the contract wording.
