Notice normally starts the day after notice is given. Check your contract — this is guidance, not legal advice.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the date notice was, or will be, handed in.
  2. Enter the notice length and choose days, weeks or months.
  3. Select your region so the following working day accounts for local bank holidays.

How the calculation works

  • Notice in days and weeks is added as calendar days from the date notice is given.
  • Notice in months moves to the same date in the later month, and shortens to the last day of the month where that date does not exist.
  • The next working day is then found by skipping weekends and bank holidays.

Example calculation

Inputs

  • Notice given 15 January
  • 1 month notice

Result

  • Notice ends 15 February
  • First day not employed 16 February

Things to keep in mind

  • Statutory minimum notice from an employee with a month or more of service is normally one week, but contracts often require more.
  • Employers must give at least one week per full year of service, up to twelve weeks, plus anything extra in the contract.

Frequently asked questions

When does my notice period start?

Usually the day after notice is given, unless your contract says otherwise. This calculator counts the full period from the date you enter.

Can my employer make me leave earlier?

They may pay you in lieu of notice if your contract allows it, or place you on garden leave. Both change your last day at work but not necessarily your pay.

Do weekends count in a notice period?

Yes. Notice runs in calendar time, so weekends and bank holidays are included in the period.
