Notice normally starts the day after notice is given. Check your contract — this is guidance, not legal advice.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the date you plan to resign.
  2. Enter your notice period and its unit.
  3. Select your UK region for the correct bank holidays.

How the calculation works

  • The notice period is added to the resignation date in calendar time.
  • If the resulting date is a weekend or a bank holiday, the calculator steps back to the previous working day for your last day at work.

Example calculation

Inputs

  • Resigning on 6 March
  • 4 weeks notice

Result

  • Employment ends 3 April
  • Last working day is the previous weekday if 3 April is not a working day

Things to keep in mind

  • Untaken holiday is often paid or taken during notice, which can change your last day at work.
  • This is general information, not legal advice. Your contract and your employer's response determine the actual leaving date.

Frequently asked questions

Does my notice start the day I resign?

Most contracts start notice the day after the resignation is received. Handing in notice in writing makes the date clear.

Can I use holiday to shorten my notice?

Only with your employer's agreement. Many employers allow accrued holiday to be taken during notice, and some pay it instead.

Do bank holidays extend my notice?

No. Notice runs in calendar time, so bank holidays fall inside the period rather than extending it.
